Scar Tape – Good or Bad?

What is scar tape?

Scar tape is a type of dressing that creates an optimal environment for scars to heal well.  They not only keep the wound properly hydrated but also protect the skin from harmful agents.  Generally speaking, these dressings are made of silicone, which over time, flattens and softens scars.  I tell my pediatric patients its like a special sticker that hugs scars just right so that it can heal perfectly. 🙂

How and when should scar tape be applied?

I advise my clients to apply scar tape after the scar has fully healed or closed and all stitches are removed.  Make sure the wound is clean and that there are no scabs or open cuts.

Does scar tape really work?

Yes.  Scar tape works.  I recommend the silicone based ones the most as there is a lot of clinical evidence behind their ability to make scars thinner, less discolored and less visible.  Of course, results will vary based on the individual but overall a very solid option for scars.

Is there anyone who should not use scar tape?

I would refer back to the question above.  If an individual’s wound is open, infected, or still has stitches, I advise you wait until these are resolved.  There are some people who might also have an allergy to the adhesive used in the scar tape so beware.

If you are shopping for scar tape, what should you look for when buying?

I would look for a few things
– Composition: Medical-grade silicone is the gold standard
– Comfort: Pick a tape that won’t peel off easily and conforms to the area where your scar is located
– Cost: Compare prices and while you might get what you pay for, there are tapes that can be reused versus others that need to be discarded
– Circulation: You dont want the tape to be too tight on the skin as you need proper circulation of air so that your skin remains comfortable and does not get irritated

Are there any alternatives to scar tape?

Yes, I would recommend silicone gel, which works similar to silicone tape.  There are also a variety of creams that contain other ingredients such as vitamin E that have been shown to demonstrate some improvement in scars.  There are several lasers now available that can also help reduce the appearance of scars and massage therapy has been used effectively to help enhance circulation to scars and break down scar tissue over time.
